Certain Energy Raises €11.6 Series A to Commercialize Long-Duration Storage

  • UK energy storage startup Certain Energy has raised €11.6 million in Series A funding to commercialize its manganese-based flow battery technology and prepare for grid-scale deployment. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, its systems store energy in liquid electrolytes held in external tanks, allowing storage duration to scale with tank size. The company targets 20-year lifespans, > 75% round-trip efficiency, and costs around one-tenth of vanadium flow batteries. The raise also reflects growing European investment in long-duration energy storage, with at least €167 million raised across seven comparable companies in 2026. The round was led by the British Business Bank, with participation from Centrica Energy, Ceres Power Holdings, and Temasek Trust C3H. The company will use the funding to develop a grid-connected MWh-scale project in India, expand UK R&D and build its supply chain.
